What should a summer survival kit contain?

Fun at festivals from morning till night, all-day hikes in the mountains under the summer sun, or action-packed weekends at a mountain cottage with friends. Summer is fantastic, but it can really take its toll on our bodies. Extreme heat, physical exertion, irregular sleep and a diet of langos or instant soups will sooner or later take their toll.

That’s exactly why you need a ‘survival kit’ designed for your body. The right nutritional supplements will help you maintain your energy levels, avoid muscle cramps and tackle all the challenges of summer with a smile. Here’s a list of the essentials you shouldn’t be without in your rucksack.

1. Electrolytes: the absolute foundation of proper hydration

This is the number one factor on which your summer energy depends. Imagine you’ve been on your feet all day, the sun is beating down and you’re sweating. You’re drinking litres of clean water, but despite that, you suddenly get a headache, feel utterly exhausted, the world is spinning, and your muscles seem to be refusing to obey you.

Why is clean water not enough? When you sweat, your body doesn’t just lose H₂O. You also lose critically important minerals – electrolytes. These are mainly sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. These substances act as electrical conductors in your body. They are responsible for transmitting nerve impulses, muscle function and maintaining the correct fluid levels in your cells.

If you only drink plain water with no minerals, you’ll dilute your internal environment even further. Your body is unable to retain water effectively, and you’ll feel dehydrated even though your stomach is full of water.

How to replenish electrolytes:

Effervescent tablets and powders: This is the simplest option. They take up very little space and you can dissolve them in a bottle of water whenever you like. Choose ones that have a balanced ratio of sodium to potassium and do not contain an excessive amount of added sugar.

When to drink them: Ideally in the morning to kick-start your hydration, during periods of peak physical activity, and in the evening before bed.

A quick tip to help you out: If you don’t have any ready-made electrolyte drinks to hand, adding a pinch of ordinary salt to a bottle of water and eating a banana alongside it will help replenish your potassium levels.

2. Healthy muscles thanks to magnesium

Whether you’re planning to hike 20 kilometres through the mountains or dance for three days straight, your muscles will be screaming for help. Magnesium is a key mineral for muscle relaxation and the proper functioning of the nervous system.

Preventing cramps: A magnesium deficiency most commonly manifests as painful cramps in the calves, particularly at night.

Which form to choose: Avoid cheap forms (such as magnesium oxide), which the body absorbs poorly and which can cause diarrhoea. Pack some magnesium bisglycinate (great for relaxation and better sleep) or magnesium malate (provides energy to your muscles throughout the day). They’re also available in handy single-serve ‘shots’.

3. An Iron Stomach: Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes

Food on trips and at festivals is a whole other story. A change in diet, fast food, on-the-go meals or cooking in a pot with hands that aren’t always perfectly clean can send your microbiome into shock. The result is bloating, a heavy feeling or an upset stomach.

Probiotics: Good bacteria will help your gut process your food more effectively. Ideally, start taking them a few days before you set off.

Digestive enzymes: If you know you’re about to eat a heavy meal, a capsule containing digestive enzymes will help your stomach break down the food more quickly and comfortably.

4. Vitamin C and zinc to combat mood swings

In summer, we tend to think we’re safe from catching a cold, but the opposite is true. Air conditioning in cars and trains, a sweaty T-shirt after sunset and the crowds of people around us place a huge strain on our immune system.

Vitamin C: Acts as a powerful antioxidant and helps the body cope with the stress of travelling and physical exertion.

Zinc: It’s your immune system’s first line of defence. If you feel like you’re ‘coming down with something’, a combination of zinc and vitamin C can get you back on your feet in no time.

The key to enjoying any summer activity is to listen to your body. No supplement can replace a good-quality meal and plenty of sleep, but in demanding summer conditions, it is electrolytes, easily absorbed magnesium and digestive support that will determine whether you enjoy your trip to the full or spend it exhausted in the shade. Set aside a small pocket in your rucksack for these supplements. It’s better to be prepared for any situation than to have to deal with an unexpected event at short notice. If you want to stock up on your summer essentials quickly and all in one place, you’ll find the full range for your summer survival kit in our Dr. LUCULLUS online shop.

Digestive enzymes under the microscope

Digestive enzymes are specialised proteins that our body naturally produces in the digestive tract (e.g. in the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas and small intestine). Their main role is to break down complex molecules in food (proteins, fats and carbohydrates) into smaller components, which the body can then absorb through the intestinal walls into the bloodstream and use as energy or building blocks.

Digestive enzymes: digestion without the drama

What would our digestion look like under a microscope? Imagine eating a delicious plate of spaghetti with cheese sauce. The great taste is just the beginning… the real magic only begins in your digestive tract. That’s where the specialists spring into action: digestive enzymes. These ‘mini-machines’ are responsible for ensuring your body can extract everything it needs from food: energy, building blocks and nutrients. Without them, you’d get almost nothing from your food, smoothies or meat. There are several digestive enzymes, and each has a specific role:

Vitamin B6: Pyridoxine for happiness, a better mood and good health

The term ‘vitamin B6’ is used to refer to three derivatives: pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. Whichever of these you consume, the active form of this vitamin is pyridoxal-5-phosphate. It is an important cofactor for enzymes. All three forms of vitamin B6 are found in the normal diet and are absorbed directly in the gut. It plays a key role in the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It is involved in more than 100 enzymatic reactions.

B10 ... for your younger self

B10 ... for your younger self

Excessive hair loss, slowed hair growth or premature greying can have various causes, with diet playing a key role. Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), also known as vitamin B10 (although it is not officially a vitamin), is one of the key nutrients that support the health of the hair, skin and the body’s overall vitality. Furthermore, it may also influence the ageing process. Despite its beneficial effects, it is less well known today, although in the past it was regarded as almost a miracle cure for maintaining youthfulness. In the 1950s, scientists investigated PABA for its potential in combating degenerative diseases and recorded cases where it had slowed down the greying of hair.

Delicious Rumanovec as a remedy for stress

In traditional medicine, chamomile – or ‘Rumanovec’ – has been used as a dye for many centuries. Due to the high content of colour pigments in its flowers, it was used to dye silk. There was no more beautiful shade of yellow. Even in Slovakia, it became well known primarily for its ability to dye fabrics and everyday items. However, we are particularly interested in its medicinal properties.

The secret to our happiness? Find out what effects vitamin B6 has

Yes, vitamin B6 has a wide range of benefits, from supporting mood to preventing heart disease. In 1938, S. Lepkovský made a significant discovery when he became the first person to isolate its crystalline form. Imagine that vitamin B6 can unlock your potential for energy, a clear mind and a balanced mood. Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is an indispensable part of your body’s functioning. This water-soluble vitamin regulates many biochemical processes, influences the production of neurotransmitters, supports metabolism and maintains hormonal balance. You may not hear much about it, but its effects are surprising. Let’s delve into the world of this invaluable ally.

B5 – the guardian of vitality and beauty

B5 – the guardian of vitality and beauty

“It’s just another vitamin… or is it?” is probably what each of us thinks, but the more we learn about pantothenic acid, the more fascinated we become. Vitamin B5 plays a key role in converting food into energy; it supports concentration, mental well-being and even skin regeneration. Without it, the body would be unable to produce hormones properly or cope with stress. It is also a substance found in every cell of our body; it has been with us since birth and contributes to energy levels, skin health and mental alertness. Although we may overlook it, its importance is undeniable and its name is no coincidence. It derives from the Greek word ‘panto’, meaning ‘everywhere’. And indeed, it is ubiquitous, irreplaceable and somewhat mysterious. If we start looking into where this essential vitamin is found, we’ll find it in eggs, nuts, wholegrains, shellfish, avocado, salmon, liver, kidneys, beef, yeast and vegetables… And if we’ve just realised that our diet is lacking in these foods, we should consider taking a B5 supplement. Within just a few days, we’d start to notice a difference. We’d wake up with more energy, our minds would be clearer, and we’d even see an improvement in our skin. Our colleagues wouldn’t fail to notice that we’re working faster, are more creative and less stressed. Pantothenic acid will help us get back into shape. And for us, it will no longer be just another substance on the list of vitamins.
