Understand the difference between probiotics and digestive enzymes

Do you suffer from an upset stomach, bloating or irregular digestion? At the chemist’s, you’ll probably be recommended one of the two most popular supplements: probiotics or digestive enzymes.

The boxes often look similar, sitting side by side on the shelf, and both promise the same result: a calm tummy. However, they play completely different roles in our bodies. Whilst some physically break down food into tiny components, others look after the overall health and ecosystem of your gut.

If you want to tackle your problem effectively, it is essential to understand when to take digestive enzymes and when to take probiotics.

Digestive enzymes

Our bodies naturally produce digestive enzymes. They are found in saliva, the stomach, the pancreas and the small intestine. They act like microscopic scissors. Their sole purpose is to take a large piece of food that you eat and ‘cut’ it into such small pieces (amino acids, fatty acids, simple sugars) that they can pass through the intestinal wall directly into the bloodstream.

Each enzyme is specialised in breaking down specific components:

Amylase breaks down carbohydrates (sugars).

Protease can break down complex proteins (such as those found in meat).

Lipase breaks down fats.

Lactase breaks down milk sugar (which is why people with lactose intolerance look for it).

Enzymes are a first-line remedy if you know you’re in for a heavy lunch, or if your body has stopped producing enough of its own enzymes (for example, due to stress or ageing). If you feel extremely full, bloated or tired within 30 to 60 minutes after a meal, it is precisely these ‘scissors’ that you are lacking. As undigested food ferments in the gut, this leads to gas and cramps. Taking an enzyme supplement just before your first mouthful prevents this fermentation.

Probiotics

Unlike inactive enzymes, probiotics are living organisms – beneficial strains of bacteria (most commonly of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) that naturally colonise our digestive tract. Rather than breaking down your Sunday lunch, they look after the overall ecosystem.

In your large intestine, they are constantly battling ‘bad’ (pathogenic) bacteria. When there are more of the good ones, everything runs like clockwork. Probiotics strengthen the intestinal walls, produce important vitamins (such as vitamin K and B vitamins) and are in constant communication with our immune system.

Probiotics will not relieve an upset stomach immediately after overeating. However, they are absolutely indispensable if you suffer from long-term digestive problems (alternating between diarrhoea and constipation), have a weakened immune system, or have recently recovered from an infection. They are absolutely essential during and after a course of antibiotics, which destroy both bad and good bacteria in the gut at the same time. To be effective, you must take them regularly over the long term.

A simple example to help you understand

Imagine your digestive system as a huge processing plant.

Digestive enzymes are the workers right on the production line. When the material (your food) arrives, they immediately set to work on it, break it down into its components and send it on. If there aren’t enough workers, the material builds up, goes off, and the whole line grinds to a halt (bloating and pain).

Probiotics are maintenance staff, security guards and gardeners all rolled into one. They do not work directly with the incoming material on the production line. However, they ensure that the factory remains clean, that pests do not run about, that toxic waste does not accumulate, and that the factory walls do not start to go mouldy.

If you’re looking for immediate relief from food intolerances or after eating certain foods that are harder to digest, digestive enzymes are your best bet. However, if you need to give your digestive system a complete reset, boost your immunity and get rid of chronic bowel problems, invest in high-quality probiotics. And for perfect balance? Many people with sensitive digestion combine both – probiotics in the morning for long-term health and enzymes specifically before heavy meals.

If you haven’t heard of the European white elm, you’re not alone. This tree isn’t one of the typical species found in our forests, but in the field of natural medicine and dietary supplements, it’s a real treasure with a long history. Whilst the elm looks like a fairly ordinary tree, its true power lies beneath the surface – more precisely, in its inner bark.

Fun at festivals from morning till night, all-day hikes in the mountains under the summer sun, or action-packed weekends at a mountain cottage with friends. Summer is fantastic, but it can really take its toll on our bodies. Extreme heat, physical exertion, irregular sleep and a diet of langos or instant soups will sooner or later take their toll.

Vitamin B6: Pyridoxine for happiness, a better mood and good health

The term ‘vitamin B6’ is used to refer to three derivatives: pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. Whichever of these you consume, the active form of this vitamin is pyridoxal-5-phosphate. It is an important cofactor for enzymes. All three forms of vitamin B6 are found in the normal diet and are absorbed directly in the gut. It plays a key role in the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It is involved in more than 100 enzymatic reactions.

In traditional medicine, chamomile – or ‘Rumanovec’ – has been used as a dye for many centuries. Due to the high content of colour pigments in its flowers, it was used to dye silk. There was no more beautiful shade of yellow. Even in Slovakia, it became well known primarily for its ability to dye fabrics and everyday items. However, we are particularly interested in its medicinal properties.

Digestive enzymes: digestion without the drama

Digestive enzymes: digestion without the drama

What would our digestion look like under a microscope? Imagine eating a delicious plate of spaghetti with cheese sauce. The great taste is just the beginning… the real magic only begins in your digestive tract. That’s where the specialists spring into action: digestive enzymes. These ‘mini-machines’ are responsible for ensuring your body can extract everything it needs from food: energy, building blocks and nutrients. Without them, you’d get almost nothing from your food, smoothies or meat. There are several digestive enzymes, and each has a specific role:

B5 – the guardian of vitality and beauty

B5 – the guardian of vitality and beauty

“It’s just another vitamin… or is it?” is probably what each of us thinks, but the more we learn about pantothenic acid, the more fascinated we become. Vitamin B5 plays a key role in converting food into energy; it supports concentration, mental well-being and even skin regeneration. Without it, the body would be unable to produce hormones properly or cope with stress. It is also a substance found in every cell of our body; it has been with us since birth and contributes to energy levels, skin health and mental alertness. Although we may overlook it, its importance is undeniable and its name is no coincidence. It derives from the Greek word ‘panto’, meaning ‘everywhere’. And indeed, it is ubiquitous, irreplaceable and somewhat mysterious. If we start looking into where this essential vitamin is found, we’ll find it in eggs, nuts, wholegrains, shellfish, avocado, salmon, liver, kidneys, beef, yeast and vegetables… And if we’ve just realised that our diet is lacking in these foods, we should consider taking a B5 supplement. Within just a few days, we’d start to notice a difference. We’d wake up with more energy, our minds would be clearer, and we’d even see an improvement in our skin. Our colleagues wouldn’t fail to notice that we’re working faster, are more creative and less stressed. Pantothenic acid will help us get back into shape. And for us, it will no longer be just another substance on the list of vitamins.

B10 ... for your younger self

B10 ... for your younger self

Excessive hair loss, slowed hair growth or premature greying can have various causes, with diet playing a key role. Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), also known as vitamin B10 (although it is not officially a vitamin), is one of the key nutrients that support the health of the hair, skin and the body’s overall vitality. Furthermore, it may also influence the ageing process. Despite its beneficial effects, it is less well known today, although in the past it was regarded as almost a miracle cure for maintaining youthfulness. In the 1950s, scientists investigated PABA for its potential in combating degenerative diseases and recorded cases where it had slowed down the greying of hair.
