Liquorice is enjoying a renaissance in modern dietary supplements

When we hear the words ‘liquorice’, many of us immediately think of the distinctive taste of black liquorice from our childhood. However, this unassuming plant, scientifically known as Glycyrrhiza glabra, holds much more than just nostalgic memories of sweets. For thousands of years, it has been a cornerstone of traditional Chinese, Indian and Greek medicine. Today, it is making a major comeback – in the form of highly effective dietary supplements.

Why should you not overlook this sweet root, and in what situations can it help you?

What secret does it hold?

The main active ingredient in liquorice is glycyrrhizin. This compound is fascinating for two reasons: firstly, it is approximately 50 times sweeter than ordinary white sugar (hence the plant’s name), and secondly, it possesses powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

However, dietary supplements do not just use glycyrrhizin on its own, but the comprehensive spectrum of more than 300 different flavonoids and phytonutrients contained in the root.

Why look for it in dietary supplements?

Liquorice is used in supplements because of its wide range of beneficial effects on the human body. Here are the most significant ones:

Soothing for the digestive tract: This is probably the most common reason why people turn to liquorice. It helps to soothe the irritated lining of the stomach and intestines. It is particularly helpful for heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), and has even been shown to be effective in healing stomach ulcers and combating the Helicobacter pylori bacterium.

Respiratory support: If you are suffering from a persistent cough, asthma or bronchitis, liquorice acts as a natural expectorant. It helps to loosen phlegm and, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, soothes the throat lining.

Stress Relief (Adaptogen): Liquorice helps regulate levels of cortisol, the main stress hormone. It supports the adrenal glands when they are exhausted and helps the body cope better with chronic stress and fatigue.

Women’s health and hormonal balance: Thanks to their phytoestrogen content, liquorice extracts are often added to supplements designed to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms of the menopause, such as hot flushes.

Although glycyrrhizin has incredible medicinal properties, it does have one drawback. When taken over a long period or in high doses, it can cause sodium retention and potassium loss, leading to a dangerous rise in blood pressure and oedema.

Liquorice reminds us that the most effective solutions for our health are often to be found in nature’s unassuming gifts. It has long since ceased to be merely an ingredient in sweets, but has become a valuable botanical ally that has found a firm place in modern home medicine cabinets. Whether you need to soothe an upset stomach, relieve an autumn cough, or are simply looking for natural support during stressful times, liquorice offers gentle yet remarkably powerful relief.

Let Yourself Shine with B2

Let Yourself Shine with B2

B10 ... for your younger self

B10 ... for your younger self

Excessive hair loss, slowed hair growth or premature greying can have various causes, with diet playing a key role. Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), also known as vitamin B10 (although it is not officially a vitamin), is one of the key nutrients that support the health of the hair, skin and the body’s overall vitality. Furthermore, it may also influence the ageing process. Despite its beneficial effects, it is less well known today, although in the past it was regarded as almost a miracle cure for maintaining youthfulness. In the 1950s, scientists investigated PABA for its potential in combating degenerative diseases and recorded cases where it had slowed down the greying of hair.

The biggest mistake when taking vitamin C: Do you make it every morning too?

The biggest mistake when taking vitamin C: Do you make it every morning too?

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an absolutely essential vitamin/nutritional supplement that virtually all of us take. It is water-soluble, but our bodies cannot produce it themselves, unlike goats, for example, which produce up to 14g a day all on their own. Almost all animals and plants can do this too, but humans are reliant on obtaining it from external sources.

How can you get a good night’s sleep?

Drinking decoctions made from various herbs and fruits has been part of human life ever since the discovery of fire. It was often the only way for people to extract beneficial substances from plants for their bodies, particularly during long winters. Gradually, people learnt which herb was beneficial for which situation or illness, and those who mastered this art were the most respected members of the community.

B5 – the guardian of vitality and beauty

B5 – the guardian of vitality and beauty

“It’s just another vitamin… or is it?” is probably what each of us thinks, but the more we learn about pantothenic acid, the more fascinated we become. Vitamin B5 plays a key role in converting food into energy; it supports concentration, mental well-being and even skin regeneration. Without it, the body would be unable to produce hormones properly or cope with stress. It is also a substance found in every cell of our body; it has been with us since birth and contributes to energy levels, skin health and mental alertness. Although we may overlook it, its importance is undeniable and its name is no coincidence. It derives from the Greek word ‘panto’, meaning ‘everywhere’. And indeed, it is ubiquitous, irreplaceable and somewhat mysterious. If we start looking into where this essential vitamin is found, we’ll find it in eggs, nuts, wholegrains, shellfish, avocado, salmon, liver, kidneys, beef, yeast and vegetables… And if we’ve just realised that our diet is lacking in these foods, we should consider taking a B5 supplement. Within just a few days, we’d start to notice a difference. We’d wake up with more energy, our minds would be clearer, and we’d even see an improvement in our skin. Our colleagues wouldn’t fail to notice that we’re working faster, are more creative and less stressed. Pantothenic acid will help us get back into shape. And for us, it will no longer be just another substance on the list of vitamins.
