Powdered electrolytes: Quick relief from tiredness, cramps and dehydration

They’re no miracle, but they’re close to it… given that you can (even today) keep sachets of electrolytes in a drawer, in your rucksack and in your car. They aren’t nutritional supplements just for the chosen few; they’re balance packs that can help you too, whether you’re an athlete, a full-time parent, an IT professional in an office, or a student revising for an exam. Powdered electrolytes aren’t just about performance; they’re about not suddenly feeling like a ‘squeezed lemon’. You have them to hand just when you need them most – simple, portable and scientifically proven to work, they’re a strategy you can use to influence your energy levels, concentration and ability to cope with physical or mental strain. And forgetting them… is impossible; once you’ve experienced the difference, they’ll be etched into your inner ‘memory’ forever. And you know what it’s like when there’s a feeling you don’t want to – or can’t – forget…

Electrolytes – a term that is appearing more and more frequently in connection with sport, health and nutrition. But what exactly are they, and what do they do? Electrolytes are minerals with an electric charge; more precisely, they are mineral ions that dissociate in water and conduct an electric current, thereby regulating the body’s water balance, supporting muscle and nervous system function, and influencing the acid-base balance in the blood (pH). The most important of these include sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), magnesium (Mg²⁺), calcium (Ca²⁺) and chlorides (Cl⁻), which our body needs for the proper functioning of cells, muscles and the brain.

The electrolyte drink also contains a premix (blend) of elements essential for promoting good health, the benefits of which have been scientifically proven. I’ll mention at least one of their effects (there are, of course, many more): selenium/cancer prevention, zinc/wound healing, copper/immunity, iodine/thyroid, iron/energy, fluoride/tooth protection, boron/hormonal balance, molybdenum/detoxification, manganese/protection against stress. It is interesting to note that all electrolytes are minerals, but not all minerals are electrolytes (iron and zinc are not electrolytes).

It is precisely in hot weather, during prolonged stomach stress, under high physical strain, or during long training sessions and also when sweating excessively – that your body loses not only water but, above all, valuable minerals (as mentioned above). As this deficiency worsens, you may experience fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness or reduced performance. Powdered electrolytes are a handy way to replenish these; simply dissolve them in water and you’ll have hydration to hand wherever you go. A study has shown that electrolyte drinks actually increase water retention compared to plain water, allowing the body to stay hydrated for longer and reducing the amount of fluid ‘overflowing’ into the stomach or bladder. Research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests that electrolyte drinks help maintain performance during prolonged exercise, prevent muscle cramps and shorten recovery time. Several clinical studies have shown that, during intense exercise, consuming drinks containing electrolytes improves maximum oxygen uptake, slows the build-up of lactic acid and delays the onset of exhaustion. Electrolytes have also proven effective in cases of diarrhoea, vomiting or excessive urination. They form the basis of oral rehydration as recommended by the WHO, significantly reducing the risk of fluid loss and dehydration.

WHEN DO THEY MAKE SENSE?

After a day at the beach, when you’re feeling a bit under the weather in the evening, some electrolytes will have you ‘back in the game’.

If you experience mild diarrhoea after a meal, opt for an electrolyte drink rather than a cola and a bread roll, and you’ll recover much more quickly.

After a night out, when simply ‘sleeping it off’ isn’t enough, electrolytes will help you rehydrate more quickly.

When you’re working from home and on a coffee marathon, when you drink four cups of coffee and forget to drink water.

During high-intensity endurance sports (e.g. triathlon).

Whether you’re working, training in hot weather, or even suffering from a headache

The advantages of powdered electrolytes are:

Quick mineral replenishment

Supports hydration, endurance and acid-base balance

Reducing fatigue and cramps

Easy to use and portable

They are what are known as ‘clean-label’ products, i.e. they contain no artificial colourings, preservatives or excessive amounts of simple sugars.

Scientists unequivocally confirm that the combination of water and electrolytes maintains better hydration and also helps to compensate for fluid loss in adverse conditions. After just a few days of regular use, you’ll notice a difference: no cramps, greater stamina, and a better mood after training or a strenuous day (its effect in preventing dehydration takes effect within minutes). Dr. Lucullus® Electrolytes do have a lemon flavour, that’s true, but you won’t feel tired after taking them.

When it comes to children’s health, everything else usually takes a back seat. Especially when they’re still very young and you’re just trying to work out what’s troubling your little one. Very often, heart-wrenching crying is caused by digestive problems – a bloated tummy that can’t cope with all the new foods it’s still learning to digest. Anyone who’s had a baby who’s cried for hours on end knows just how awful that distress is. Yet very often, advice from experienced older neighbours – who have ‘teas for everything’ – has proved helpful.

We probably all have a good supply of medicines at home in case we catch a cold, or even the flu. It’s the same every single year. The temperature drops, the weather turns damp and chilly, and the viral infections start to spread. But we’re prepared! Celaskon, various cough syrups, paracetamol… A box (or even a large box) of all sorts of medicines will sort it out, won’t it? And if not, then whilst we’re coughing, grumbling and lying in bed, we solemnly promise ourselves that we’ll finally start hardening ourselves to the cold. As soon as the illness has passed...

Next-generation vitamin C: How does VEG-C differ from standard supplements?

Most of us associate vitamin C with the classic sour tablet. In fact, it’s a vitamin that plays a vital role in the body, helping us to cope with stress, supporting our immune system, collagen production and iron absorption. And as it doesn’t last long in the body, we need to replenish it daily. During periods of stress or illness, our need for it can even increase several-fold. And honestly, do you know anyone who isn’t stressed these days?
