Vitamin A... not just for your eyesight

It acts in your body much like a ‘superhero’, fighting free radicals, improving your eyesight, boosting your immune system and looking after your skin as if it were a specialist from a prestigious beauty salon. It’s called beta-carotene, a natural wonder found in smoothies and salads alike. Beta-carotene is a pigment that gives vegetables such as carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes their characteristic orange (but also yellow or red) colour. It is the word ‘carota’ (the Latin name for carrot) that formed the basis of its name. And in fact, carrots are one of the vegetables with the highest beta-carotene content.

In the body, beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A, but only in the amount that the body actually needs. It is what is known as provitamin A, which is important for healthy eyesight, beautiful and hydrated skin, the proper functioning of the immune system, and the health of organs such as the heart, lungs and kidneys. This is one of the reasons why beta-carotene is one of the most valuable substances in the plant kingdom. A vitamin that helps you see better, feel better and look better.

In addition, it plays an important role in the production of white blood cells, which protect the body against infections, and contributes to the health of the mucous membranes (in the eyes and the digestive tract), which form a natural barrier against pathogens. Retinoids – the active forms of vitamin A – also stimulate skin cell renewal, promote collagen production, accelerate wound healing and help with conditions such as acne, psoriasis and premature skin ageing.

From a nutritional point of view, beta-carotene is also a powerful antioxidant that neutralises the free radicals responsible for damaging cells and accelerating the ageing process. According to Harvard Health, regular intake of beta-carotene can make a significant contribution to the prevention of chronic diseases. Studies show that high levels of carotenoids in the blood can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration – a serious condition affecting the retina – by up to 35 per cent. Seeing more clearly means feeling better. Thanks to beta-carotene, your body gets exactly what it needs: protection, regeneration and nourishment – naturally, straight from the plant world.

There is evidence to suggest that beta-carotene, like other antioxidants, can improve memory and cognitive function. It reduces the risk of heart disease (beta-carotene and its interactions with other elements help eliminate bad cholesterol stored in the body). Observational studies link a higher intake of β-carotene with a lower risk of mortality and certain types of cancer. Vitamin A supports reproductive health and a healthy pregnancy. Although it is found in carrots, spinach and broccoli, we do not always consume as much as we need, particularly if we lead a hectic lifestyle, follow a restrictive diet, or if our bodies do not absorb nutrients properly. In that case, the Vitamin A – Dr Lucullus dietary supplement is the right solution:

It supports the immune system – particularly during times of stress, the flu season or when the body is run down.

Improves the condition of the skin – excellent for dry, irritated or sensitive skin.

Helps maintain healthy eyesight – essential for the production of visual pigment.

It prepares the skin for sunbathing – beta-carotene helps the skin respond better to the sun and may reduce the risk of sunburn. A healthy tan is an added bonus. Do you want a naturally golden skin tone without the sun? Beta-carotene gradually builds up in the skin, giving it a subtly tanned appearance without the damage caused by UV rays. What’s more, it acts as sun protection from within. So if you’re longing for skin that looks like an Instagram filter without the filter, beta-carotene can help. It’s ideal for women who look after their skin and want to brighten their complexion. For those who don’t want to risk a vitamin A overdose but still want its benefits. And for those getting ready for a holiday. Vitamin A is a simple, natural and safe way to look after yourself every day, without any risks.

Your body deserves nutrition that works with it – see for yourself how beta-carotene, which works intelligently and effectively, can transform your eyesight, skin and energy levels. And although you can read and hear a lot about its effects, it’s better to see it once (and enjoy clearer vision, a radiant complexion and a better sense of self) than to hear about it a hundred times. Omega 3 protects your cardiovascular system

There's a scene in an old movie where Grandma or Grandpa make little kids drink a spoonful of fish oil every morning. The kids hate it, it tastes disgusting. "But you'll be healthy!"- is the sentence of the caring grandparents. Where did this come from? It is still true today, except that science has managed to turn the miraculous fish oil into "ordinary" tablets or extracts with no normal taste.

Greater nasturtium: A common fence plant or nature’s most powerful antibiotic?

You may know it as an undemanding annual with bright yellow, orange and red flowers, which sprawls profusely along fences and in gardens. However, the greater nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) is much more than just a feast for the eyes. In herbalism and natural medicine, this plant, native to South America, is regarded as one of the most effective natural remedies.

Magnesium - the most important mineral?

Magnesium - the most important mineral?

If you ask any athlete (especially endurance athletes) what nutritional supplement they always have with them for competitions, the most common answer will be "magnesium". Magnesium is definitely one of the most important minerals for our body. It is a so-called "deficiency" mineral because we excrete it from the body during excessive exertion, but also when we are not exercising! Just living in a noisy, stressful, demanding environment is enough...

Soothing Magnesium (Magnesium Bisglycinate)

Soothing Magnesium (Magnesium Bisglycinate)

Magnesium is an important mineral for the proper functioning of the body. The name magnesium comes from the Greek city of Magnesia, where this element was originally discovered in 1755. It is the 8th most abundant element on earth, making up approximately 2% of the earth's crust. It has a naturally sour taste, which is also evident in mineral waters. It is found in every cell of green plants (magnesium ions are present) and also in every cell of the human body. Our body needs magnesium for more than 300 biochemical processes, such as energy production and nucleic acid synthesis, maintaining proper heart rhythm and blood pressure. It would be difficult to find a process in the body that magnesium does not influence.

Milk thistle – the liver’s guardian

Milk thistle – the liver’s guardian

In nature, there are plants with a story to tell; one of them is the (sharp) milk thistle (Silybum marianum) – an unassuming thistle that harbours the power to protect the liver. The liver is a unique organ – the only one capable of regenerating itself. Yet it has its limits. Every day, it battles toxins, cleanses the blood, breaks down harmful substances and ensures a sufficient supply of energy. In today’s world, the liver suffers more than ever – an unhealthy diet, alcohol, stress and excessive use of medication all take their toll. And because the liver doesn’t hurt and doesn’t make itself heard, we often fail to notice that it is crying out for help. Milk thistle is a helper that gives the liver a chance to cope with the demands we place on it every day. That’s why it’s more than just a dietary supplement; milk thistle is a reminder that we must look after our bodies, even when we don’t yet feel any problems. When the liver suffers, the whole body suffers (from digestion right through to the immune system).

K2 as a GPS

“Calcium on its own isn’t enough; it can even be harmful to your health.” What sort of conspiracy theory is this, you might think... After all, we need calcium for our bones, our teeth… but if we were to read the specialist literature, we’d find out… yes, calcium is important, but only if it knows where it’s supposed to be. Because when it wanders around the body unchecked, it can ‘park’ itself in the arteries, kidneys or joints. Calcium in the arteries contributes to their hardening (calcification), thereby increasing the risk of a heart attack, stroke or high blood pressure. This is where vitamin K2 comes to the rescue. It activates a protein called Matrix GLA protein, which ‘cleans’ the blood vessels by preventing calcium from being deposited in their walls. At the same time, it activates osteocalcin, which ensures that calcium goes where it is needed. This is precisely why vitamin K2 is essential – it acts as a GPS for calcium. With its special ability to regulate calcium transport – and not just any old way – it literally acts as a navigator for calcium, ensuring it doesn’t end up where it doesn’t belong (in the arteries), but is directed to where it’s needed: in the bones and teeth. The most effective form of vitamin K2 is MK-7 (menaquinone); although it sounds like a supporting character, it is a systems operator (the sort who doesn’t take the stage at meetings, but without whom the whole company would collapse).  Scientists aren’t exactly the sort to follow trends; they don’t always agree, but in the case of vitamin K2, also known as MK-7, they report that this vitamin has many benefits:
