Zinc: The unsung hero of your digestion

When we hear the word ‘zinc’, most of us immediately think of a strong immune system, fighting acne, or healthy hair and nails. But did you know that this trace element is absolutely vital for your digestive system? Without zinc, your body wouldn’t be able to break down food properly and absorb the essential nutrients from it.

Here’s an overview of why zinc is so essential for your tummy.

1. Gastric acid stimulator

The stomach needs acid (hydrochloric acid – HCl) that is strong enough to break down proteins and destroy any harmful bacteria in food. Can you guess what the body needs to produce it? That’s right, zinc.

Zinc plays a role in the production of the enzyme responsible for producing this acid. If you are deficient in zinc, the production of stomach acid decreases. Food may then take much longer to digest in your stomach, which often causes bloating, heartburn and an unpleasant feeling of heaviness after eating.

2. A motor for digestive enzymes

Digestion does not end in the stomach. Food travels on to the small intestine, where the pancreas secretes digestive enzymes. These enzymes break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins into tiny particles that the body can utilise.

Zinc acts as a so-called cofactor (helper) for many of these enzymes. To put it simply: without zinc, these enzymes would be like cars without ignition keys – they would be there physically, but they wouldn’t work at all.

3. Protector of the intestinal barrier

The intestines are lined on the inside with a thin layer of cells that acts as a security barrier. It allows nutrients to pass into the body, but blocks toxins and bacteria. This mucous membrane must be renewed very quickly and continuously.

As zinc is essential for cell growth and division, it plays a vital role in maintaining a strong and healthy intestinal wall. It thus helps to prevent a condition known as ‘leaky gut syndrome’, in which substances that do not belong there enter the bloodstream and can cause inflammation.

When diet isn’t enough: How to choose and take zinc supplements correctly?

Sometimes, due to stress, poor digestion, a vegan diet or increased physical activity, we are unable to get enough zinc from food alone. That’s when dietary supplements come into play. However, not all zinc is the same. When choosing a supplement, pay particular attention to the chemical form in which the zinc is present.

Form Matters (Organic vs. Inorganic)

Chelated and organic forms (Excellent absorption): Look for names such as zinc bisglycinate, zinc picolinate or zinc citrate. Your body recognises these forms best; they pass easily through the intestinal wall and do not cause stomach upset.

Zinc Forte by Dr LUCULLUS is a high-quality supplement you can rely on to support your body’s defences. It provides excellent support for your skin, hair, nails and brain function. It’s the right choice if you’re looking for a reliable supplement to incorporate into your daily routine.

Inorganic forms (poor bioavailability): Often, cheaper products contain zinc oxide or zinc sulphate. These forms have low bioavailability (the body utilises only a fraction of them) and, in more sensitive individuals, may cause nausea or cramps when taken on an empty stomach.

How can you ensure you get enough zinc from your daily diet?

The body cannot produce zinc itself, nor can it store large amounts of it over the long term. We therefore need to consume it regularly through our diet. Fortunately, it is found in many common and tasty foods:

Seeds and nuts: Pumpkin seeds (one of the best plant-based sources), cashew nuts, almonds.

Meat and poultry: Beef, turkey and high-quality red meat.

Seafood: Oysters are by far the richest source of zinc, but crabs and prawns are also good sources.

Pulses: Chickpeas, lentils and various types of beans.

Wholemeal products: Oat flakes, quinoa.

Zinc may not get as much attention in adverts as vitamin C or probiotics, but it does a huge amount of behind-the-scenes work for our digestion. It really isn’t just a quick fix when your throat starts to feel scratchy in winter. It’s the imaginary key that gets your stomach going, revives your digestive enzymes and builds a protective shield for your gut.

Soothing Magnesium (Magnesium Bisglycinate)

Magnesium is an important mineral for the proper functioning of the body. The name magnesium comes from the Greek city of Magnesia, where this element was originally discovered in 1755. It is the 8th most abundant element on earth, making up approximately 2% of the earth's crust. It has a naturally sour taste, which is also evident in mineral waters. It is found in every cell of green plants (magnesium ions are present) and also in every cell of the human body. Our body needs magnesium for more than 300 biochemical processes, such as energy production and nucleic acid synthesis, maintaining proper heart rhythm and blood pressure. It would be difficult to find a process in the body that magnesium does not influence.

Minerals: the heroes of our bodies

Whilst vitamins often steal the limelight on food packaging and in adverts, there is another group of micronutrients without which our bodies would simply cease to function. These are minerals. These inorganic substances, derived from the earth and water, are literally the building blocks of our bodies. Not only do they form our bones and teeth, but they also act as catalysts that trigger thousands of enzymatic reactions, maintain our heart’s rhythm and ensure we have energy from the moment the alarm clock goes off in the morning until we fall asleep at night.

Another vitamin in the B-complex group is vitamin B5 – pantothenic acid. It is both an acid and a vitamin. It plays an important role in metabolism (the conversion of substances) during the formation of coenzyme A. It is essential for the production of haemoglobin – the blood pigment that transports oxygen and CO₂ from the lungs to the organs and back.

At first glance, the black chokeberry may seem unremarkable, but it is in fact one of the healthiest berries you can find here. It originally comes from North America, where its properties were used as a remedy for colds or to make pemmican, a food with an extremely long shelf life that was prepared mainly for the long winter months. If you haven’t heard of it yet, it’s time to put that right!

Zinc is (after iron) the second most important trace element, and it performs irreplaceable biological functions in the human body. It plays a role in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, supports the immune system, and promotes the health of the skin, hair and bones, as well as helping to maintain hormonal balance. The citrate form of zinc is one of the most easily absorbed forms of this mineral and offers a host of health benefits. Is zinc really essential? Zinc is found in every cell in our bodies and performs a number of important functions, such as:

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has long been recognised as capable of improving immune function and reducing the severity and duration of colds and flu. It is widely known that vitamin C is essential for optimal immune system function and overall health. This is confirmed by the fact that vitamin C is one of the most popular and widely used dietary supplements worldwide. It is precisely the low content of this vitamin in processed foods that requires its regular supplementation. In addition to strengthening immunity and shortening the duration of colds, it plays an important role in wound healing, improving brain function and supporting bone strength.
