The hidden conductor of the female cycle: Why is vitamin D more of a hormone than just an ordinary vitamin?

When we hear the term ‘vitamin D’, most of us think of healthy bones, a stronger immune system or getting a tan in the summer. For the female body, however, this unassuming nutrient means much more. Doctors are now confirming a surprising fact: vitamin D behaves more like a hormone than a conventional vitamin within the body.

A woman’s ovaries and uterus both have special ‘receptors’ for it. If the body is low on the ‘sunshine vitamin’, the menstrual cycle is often the first to be affected.

The silent conductor of your hormones

The menstrual cycle functions like a perfectly coordinated orchestra, orchestrated by the brain in conjunction with the ovaries. Vitamin D acts as a key conductor in this process:

It helps the ovaries produce the correct levels of oestrogen and progesterone — the two main female hormones. It signals the eggs to mature properly and be released at the right time (ovulation). It prepares the lining of the womb for each new cycle, which directly affects both the heaviness and the pattern of bleeding.

What can vitamin D help to improve?

1. Fewer cramps and more bearable days Severe period pain is caused by substances that trigger inflammation and uterine contractions. Vitamin D acts as a natural anti-inflammatory shield — it suppresses the production of these irritants, meaning the uterus does not contract as much and the pain in the lower abdomen is significantly reduced.

2. Calmer days before your period (Goodbye PMS) Nervousness, tearfulness, unexplained anger or sudden cravings for sweet things before your period are closely linked to a drop in the ‘feel-good hormone’ — serotonin. Vitamin D helps the brain produce this hormone and keep it in balance, which tends to make premenstrual syndrome much milder.

3. A cycle you can rely on If your period is late or occasionally skips a month altogether, a lack of ovulation may be to blame. Vitamin D provides the ovaries with the energy they need for the egg to mature and be released on time.

4. A great help for PCOS Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) often struggle with irregular periods, acne and weight gain. Vitamin D improves the body’s ability to process blood sugar. This reduces levels of male hormones that disrupt the cycle and helps the body return to its natural rhythm.

How to top it up safely

From autumn to spring, we get woefully little sunshine in Slovakia, and we obtain only a fraction of what our bodies actually need from our diet (fish, eggs).

Get your blood tested: Ask for a vitamin D test during a routine check-up or at your gynaecologist’s. This will tell you exactly where you’re starting from. How much to take: The usual daily dose for an adult woman is 1,000 to 2,000 IU, but if you have a severe deficiency, your doctor may recommend a higher dose.Take it with fat: Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so always take drops or capsules with a substantial meal (for example, breakfast containing eggs, avocado or butter).Best companions – Vitamin K2 and magnesium: Vitamin D works best as part of a team. Together with vitamin K2, it ensures that calcium is deposited directly into the bones, whilst magnesium helps to activate vitamin D in the body.

Menstruation shouldn’t be a form of suffering that takes you out of your normal life every month. Taking vitamin D supplements is a simple yet extremely effective way to restore your body’s balance.

Next-generation vitamin C: How does VEG-C differ from standard supplements?

Most of us associate vitamin C with the classic sour tablet. In fact, it’s a vitamin that plays a vital role in the body, helping us to cope with stress, supporting our immune system, collagen production and iron absorption. And as it doesn’t last long in the body, we need to replenish it daily. During periods of stress or illness, our need for it can even increase several-fold. And honestly, do you know anyone who isn’t stressed these days?

Histamine Control Immunity and Vitality

Histamine Control

Histamine is often perceived negatively, especially for its role in allergic reactions and intolerance. As with many things in life, black-and-white thinking is not suitable for this biogenic amine. As a neurotransmitter, it participates in many critical processes. In defending the body, for example, it supports the enlargement of blood vessels, making it easier for immune cells to access the site of inflammation. At the same time, it stimulates the production of gastric juices (essential for food processing), regulates the sleep cycle, controls appetite, and plays a role in learning, memory, and emotions. Histamine naturally occurs in the human body, and its balance is crucial for health. In the digestive system, it's broken down by the enzyme diamine oxidase. However, if histamine intake is greater than the body can break down, histamine intolerance develops. This imbalance can be caused by stress, poor lifestyle, medicines, or other factors. Excess histamine can lead to unpleasant symptoms, often resembling food allergies or digestive issues. It's essential to understand histamine as an important helper in our body.

B9 with a huge impact

B9 with a huge impact

If you were to analyse your diet today, you might find that, despite eating healthily, you’re not getting enough vitamin B9 – folic acid. Avocado toast may be all the rage, but unlike spinach, lentils or broccoli, it doesn’t contain much B9. Folic acid was first isolated from spinach, and although it is most commonly associated with pregnancy, its importance affects us all.

Imagine that your cells are like your favourite trainers – new, clean, comfortable and flexible. But if you wear them every day to the gym, in the woods or in the mud – and, above all, without cleaning them – they’ll quickly lose their sparkle, and you won’t feel comfortable in them, let alone be able to perform at your best. It’s exactly the same with your body. Stress, UV radiation and smog all take their toll on your cells. And when their protective barrier is compromised, it starts with symptoms you’ll notice in dry skin, slower healing of blisters from trainers or cuts, or the fact that after the weekend you don’t look as fresh as a juicy piece of fruit.  But you’re not on your own – there are nutrients that act as ‘cleaners’, one of which is vitamin E (the one that doesn’t show off, but gets the job done). It helps cells resist damage, protects the heart, boosts immunity and slows down the process we call ‘maturation’ (I mean ageing). These days, we can’t switch off the world around us, but we can strengthen what’s inside us. And vitamin E is the boost your body will appreciate.

Iodine-Kelp

Iodine-Kelp

Probably everyone who has seen the excellent series Chernobyl remembers the scene where the female lead in the Belarusian ministry gives iodine tablets to her secretary, who incidentally tells her that she is pregnant. Iodine is a chemical element that our body needs for the thyroid gland to function properly. And anyone who has thyroid problems knows how much it affects the body. It is necessary to understand how complex our body is and what needs to be done to stay healthy and functional.

Someone once called allergies the scourge of the 20th century. And they were right. These days, it’s rare to find anyone in your circle who doesn’t suffer from some form of allergy or intolerance, especially if they live in a city. Pollen forecasts have become a regular feature of weather reports, and warnings about gluten, milk and starch appear on food labels. Quite simply, we live in a world where the human body has not had time to adapt to all these stimuli, or where, through living in a sterile environment, it has lost the ability to resist external stimuli.

How to treat a cold or the flu?

We probably all have a good supply of medicines at home in case we catch a cold, or even the flu. It’s the same every single year. The temperature drops, the weather turns damp and chilly, and the viral infections start to spread. But we’re prepared! Celaskon, various cough syrups, paracetamol… A box (or even a large box) of all sorts of medicines will sort it out, won’t it? And if not, then whilst we’re coughing, grumbling and lying in bed, we solemnly promise ourselves that we’ll finally start hardening ourselves to the cold. As soon as the illness has passed...
