Ashwagandha - cortisol tamer

You certainly know the feeling when you feel threatened. A big dog ran at you from behind the fence, your boss plowed into you in a meeting and carried you under the ground, or your mortgage is due tomorrow and you just got fired from your job. In such cases, the body produces a steroid hormone - cortisol. This already protects us in dangerous situations and the body prepares the "fight or flight" position. The heart pumps, blood rushes to vital organs, pain levels suppress... You say to yourself - the most useful thing under the sun!

But not in everyday life. Whereas once upon a time you fought or fled and after a few hours there was peace and the body returned to normal, in today's world you can have "butterflies in your stomach" for days, weeks. It's called - living in constant stress. The results you certainly know well. Pressure, nervousness, stomach and digestive problems, Increased psychological problems, insomnia... They probably claim that up to 80% of all modern diseases are caused by stress and nervous tension.

I'm sure you also know ways to cope with it. A glass or two, cigarettes (whether with tobacco or other material), various buffer pills. Some people vent to family or subordinates, the more mature ones go to the gym or do various sports. The present solution is simple - get rid of the source of stress. And we are at the core of the problem. Not everyone can pay the mortgage tomorrow, leave for a better job, change partners, cope with the loss of a loved one...

Therefore, people sought ways to resolve these situations. Meditation, yoga, Ayurveda. Consumption of calming teas and herbs. Natural medicine. And so they discovered Withania somnifera - a plant used in Ayurveda and called Ashwagandha in Sanskrit. It is also called Indian ginseng. Its roots contain withanolides and 80 other biologically active substances (alkaloids, steroidal lactones, flavonoids, saponins, oligosaccharides, tannins, etc.). Their effect on the human body is fascinating.

Ashwagandha suppresses cortisol, thereby reducing stress in the body and actually increasing the body's mental and physical resilience. It is used in the treatment of asthma and inflammatory diseases, supports cognitive function, and reduces tension and feelings of anxiety. In addition, almost every study mentions its effect on libido - increased sexual desire in both men and women. It supports sperm production and is also used experimentally by people who have difficulty conceiving a child. It lowers blood pressure and improves concentration and memory. It is also called the "herb of youth" because it is said to slow down ageing. It is amazing what nature has managed to pack into herbs.

The extract of its roots should contain 5-10% of vitanolides, and the daily dose should be in the range of 300-500mg. It is suitable for everyone, it is not recommended only for young children and lactating women. It should be taken during the day, not in the morning when the body flushes out cortisol upon waking, so that you are awake and ready for a new day. In such cases (taking it first thing in the morning), the depressant effects could become apparent. On the contrary, in the afternoon, it stimulates and, by reducing stress, in turn increases the working mood and sense of well-being.

If you are going to look for Ashwagandha, it is important that you check the ingredients of the product you are buying. It should have a clearly stated ratio of vitanolides (around 25mg per dose) and a daily gram up to 500mg. A specialty eshop that is dedicated exclusively to nutritional supplements is a good choice when buying this exceptional product.

Magnesium - the most important mineral?

If you ask any athlete (especially endurance athletes) what nutritional supplement they always have with them for competitions, the most common answer will be "magnesium". Magnesium is definitely one of the most important minerals for our body. It is a so-called "deficiency" mineral because we excrete it from the body during excessive exertion, but also when we are not exercising! Just living in a noisy, stressful, demanding environment is enough...

Zinc - the killer of fatigue

In addition to supplements, functioning and various supplements, our body needs to 100% and the so-called trace substances. The designation "trace" means that our body needs it only in small amounts. We need 10mg of zinc per day, which is 37 times smaller compared to magnesium (375mg). It would seem that we are talking about a complete uselessness. However, the opposite is true. Zinc affects over 200 biochemical reactions in our body!

K2 as a GPS

K2 as a GPS

“Calcium on its own isn’t enough; it can even be harmful to your health.” What sort of conspiracy theory is this, you might think... After all, we need calcium for our bones, our teeth… but if we were to read the specialist literature, we’d find out… yes, calcium is important, but only if it knows where it’s supposed to be. Because when it wanders around the body unchecked, it can ‘park’ itself in the arteries, kidneys or joints. Calcium in the arteries contributes to their hardening (calcification), thereby increasing the risk of a heart attack, stroke or high blood pressure. This is where vitamin K2 comes to the rescue. It activates a protein called Matrix GLA protein, which ‘cleans’ the blood vessels by preventing calcium from being deposited in their walls. At the same time, it activates osteocalcin, which ensures that calcium goes where it is needed. This is precisely why vitamin K2 is essential – it acts as a GPS for calcium. With its special ability to regulate calcium transport – and not just any old way – it literally acts as a navigator for calcium, ensuring it doesn’t end up where it doesn’t belong (in the arteries), but is directed to where it’s needed: in the bones and teeth. The most effective form of vitamin K2 is MK-7 (menaquinone); although it sounds like a supporting character, it is a systems operator (the sort who doesn’t take the stage at meetings, but without whom the whole company would collapse).  Scientists aren’t exactly the sort to follow trends; they don’t always agree, but in the case of vitamin K2, also known as MK-7, they report that this vitamin has many benefits:

Vitamin A - and I see...

Vitamin A - Retinol, was discovered in 1916. But only 15 years later its chemical structure was determined. And it took another 15 years before we learned to produce it synthetically (in the form of acetate). It's quite rare in dietary supplement stores, which is odd because a lack of it can lead to even gray-blindness.

Aronia is an underrated wonder, and here’s everything you need to know about it

It contains more antioxidants than blueberries, frost won’t damage it, and your immune system will love it. The black chokeberry isn’t one of the sweetest fruits, but given its health benefits, it could well be called the queen of Slovak gardens. At first glance, the black chokeberry may seem unremarkable, but it is in fact one of the healthiest berries you can find here. It originally comes from North America, where its properties were used as a remedy for colds or to make pemmican, a food with an extremely long shelf life that was prepared mainly for the long winter months. If you haven’t heard of it yet, it’s time to put that right!

The queen of women’s herbs: Lady’s mantle has long been a trusted ally to women

If there is one plant we would particularly recommend to the fairer half of humanity, it would be yellow-green alchemilla, which is also known as the ‘women’s cloak’ due to its effects. It has long been used to treat the menopause and period pain, as well as to strengthen the uterus during pregnancy. Do not use it during the first trimester; it is recommended for use only in the second half of pregnancy.
