The queen of women’s herbs: Lady’s mantle has long been a trusted ally to women

If there is one plant we would particularly recommend to the fairer half of humanity, it would be yellow-green alchemilla, which is also known as the ‘women’s cloak’ due to its effects. It has long been used to treat the menopause and period pain, as well as to strengthen the uterus during pregnancy. Do not use it during the first trimester; it is recommended for use only in the second half of pregnancy.

Its name derives from the Arabic word al-kīmiya. Alchemists attempted to produce gold by transforming various metals, but also incredibly ordinary objects. One of the secret ingredients in the production of gold was water, trapped in the leaves of this little plant. As far as we know, it didn’t work...

What will certainly help, however, is tea made from this plant. Here, we recognise three types of alchemilla: common, yellow-green and soft. All have medicinal properties. In the wild, droplets of water often appear on the leaves of alchemilla – this is known as the ‘lotus effect’. Its leaves are hydrophobic – they prevent water from penetrating the surface.

Lady’s mantle contains flavonoids, tannins, vitamin C, bitter compounds, essential oils… As a result, lady’s mantle helps to stop bleeding, relieves cramps and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. It helps to fight bacteria and viruses. Since time immemorial, it has helped women to relieve cramps and is also effective in cases of heavy bleeding. Lady’s mantle is recommended for women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome.

It can also help with fertility issues, precisely because of its ability to influence the menstrual cycle. It can even help just before childbirth by supporting and regulating contractions – it stimulates uterine contractions. It is also recommended after childbirth, as it helps restore the uterus’s structure and has a calming effect on the mind. However, take care when breastfeeding – discuss its use with your doctor.

To ensure it’s not just about women’s health issues, Alchemilka is excellent for mouth ulcers – it helps them to heal. For minor sores, we recommend gargling with alchemilla or washing the sores with an extract made from it. Similarly, it can also help with sores all over the body.

Lady’s mantle is said to help with hypertension (high blood pressure) by relaxing the muscles and aiding blood flow through the blood vessels. There are studies that support this theory, but so far they have only been carried out on animals. Its beneficial effects on the central nervous system and the restoration of its functions following oxygen deprivation have also been investigated. Again, there is a study conducted only on animals. However, it is also suitable for men, as it effectively helps with diarrhoea, laryngitis, bleeding gums, or as a gargle for laryngitis.

You can use it to make a delicious cup of tea; the steeping time is 7 to 8 minutes. You can drink 2–3 cups a day. Our Alchemilla is grown on an organic farm in Slovakia, right beneath Kriváň. It contains no GM ingredients or allergens. Health straight from nature, straight into your cup.

Do you suffer from allergies, histamine reactions or fatigue? Discover the healing power of Moringa

The Tree of Life. That is the name given to the Moringa oleifera, a tree native to the foothills of the Himalayas. Today, it can be found throughout India and has even spread to Arabia, Africa and Madagascar. It can grow up to 12 metres tall and have a trunk 30 cm thick. It can grow at a rate of 3 metres a year! As almost every part of it can be used (leaves, fruit, trunk), it is often pruned to take the shape of a low-growing shrub.

Greater nasturtium – a beauty with the power of antibiotics

Monk’s cress is an older name for nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus), whose medicinal properties were already known in the 16th century. The appearance of the flowers and the name are a reference to the traditional robes of monks. It originally grew in the Andes, where indigenous tribes used it for healing, to boost strength and to aid recovery. Later, people from across the region would visit herbalists to seek out its medicinal heritage: decoctions, ointments and teas, as they understood the secrets of nature better than anyone else. In our grandmother’s herbarium, we found a description of the capuchin flower: a flowering panacea that does no harm, only helps. Today, we too can benefit from this traditional wisdom, and its benefits are scientifically proven. If you pluck a leaf from the nasturtium, the plant immediately activates a rapid regeneration mechanism and begins to ‘heal its wounds’ and continue growing. Thanks to its wide range of bioactive compounds and nutritional benefits, it is a valuable component of natural medicine and disease prevention. Modern science has discovered a wealth of beneficial substances in its leaves, flowers and seeds.

Why vitamin K2-MK7 is the missing piece for your heart and bones

Imagine you’re building a house. You’ve ordered the very best bricks and hired a whole team of workers, but there’s no site manager on the building site. The workers just pile the bricks wherever it suits them – right on the driveway. Instead of solid walls, you suddenly end up with something that bears no resemblance whatsoever to the house you had planned.

Vitamin A - and I see...

Vitamin A - and I see...

Vitamin A - Retinol, was discovered in 1916. But only 15 years later its chemical structure was determined. And it took another 15 years before we learned to produce it synthetically (in the form of acetate). It's quite rare in dietary supplement stores, which is odd because a lack of it can lead to even gray-blindness.

Omega 3 protects your cardiovascular system

Omega 3 protects your cardiovascular system

There's a scene in an old movie where Grandma or Grandpa make little kids drink a spoonful of fish oil every morning. The kids hate it, it tastes disgusting. "But you'll be healthy!"- is the sentence of the caring grandparents. Where did this come from? It is still true today, except that science has managed to turn the miraculous fish oil into "ordinary" tablets or extracts with no normal taste.

Oh, that memory! How to support it with dietary supplements

In today’s fast-paced world, our memory and concentration are really put to the test. We often think that the occasional lapse in memory is simply a natural part of ageing, stress or overwork. The truth, however, is that our brain is an organ that consumes a huge amount of energy and is extremely sensitive to the nutrients we provide it with. It functions as an extremely complex system, and if it lacks essential building blocks and high-quality nutrients, its performance begins to decline and we find ourselves unable to remember where we’ve put our keys.

Milk thistle – the liver’s guardian

Milk thistle – the liver’s guardian

In nature, there are plants with a story to tell; one of them is the (sharp) milk thistle (Silybum marianum) – an unassuming thistle that harbours the power to protect the liver. The liver is a unique organ – the only one capable of regenerating itself. Yet it has its limits. Every day, it battles toxins, cleanses the blood, breaks down harmful substances and ensures a sufficient supply of energy. In today’s world, the liver suffers more than ever – an unhealthy diet, alcohol, stress and excessive use of medication all take their toll. And because the liver doesn’t hurt and doesn’t make itself heard, we often fail to notice that it is crying out for help. Milk thistle is a helper that gives the liver a chance to cope with the demands we place on it every day. That’s why it’s more than just a dietary supplement; milk thistle is a reminder that we must look after our bodies, even when we don’t yet feel any problems. When the liver suffers, the whole body suffers (from digestion right through to the immune system).
